The COUNT FLEET is named for the 1943 Triple Crown winner. Owned by Mrs. John D. Hertz, Count Fleet carried the Hertz colors and jockey John Longden to victories of three, eight, and 25 lengths in the classics. He was the champion two year old of 1942 and champion three-year-old and Horse of the Year in 1943.
The COUNT FLEET was run at one mile as the Count Fleet Handicap at Belmont Park in 1975; at a mile and a sixteenth from 1977 to 1983; at seven furlongs in 1976; and not run in 1982. In 1991, Stately Wager finished first but was disqualifed and placed second.
